Six ressortissants étrangers et un banquier sénégalais nommé Diape Seck font face à une inculpation fédérale dans le Maryland pour avoir fraudé des institutions financières.
D'aprés Rewmi, les conspirateurs auraient déposé des chèques volés dans des églises sur des comptes bancaires ouverts frauduleusement, puis auraient retiré les fonds volés.
Les conspirateurs ont obtenu ou tenté d’obtenir plus de 700 000 $. Il s’agit du Sénégalais Diape Seck, 27 ans, de Rockville, Maryland ; Nicolae Gindac, 52 ans, de Dania Beach, Floride ; Mateus Vaduva alias « Romi », 28 ans ; Marius Vaduva, 26 ans; Marian Unguru, 36 ans; Daniel Velcu, 43 ans ; et Vali Unguru, 18 ans, tous de Baltimore, Maryland.
Ils sont accusés de fraude bancaire fédérale et de complot de fraude électronique. L’acte d’accusation de remplacement a été rendu le 17 février 2021 et a été descellé en partie lors de la comparution initiale de Diape Seck le 22 février 2021.
Selon des documents judiciaires, une enquête menée par la banque victime où travaillait Diape Seck a révélé que Seck aurait violé de nombreuses politiques bancaires en ouvrant environ 412 comptes chèques sur une période d’un an, du 2 janvier 2019 au 3 janvier 2020 environ, en s’appuyant principalement sur Passeports roumains et informations sur le permis de conduire.
Des chèques payables et émis par des églises et d’autres institutions religieuses de tout le pays auraient été déposés sur bon nombre des 412 comptes chèques qui n’étaient pas ouverts au nom des églises. Les forces de l’ordre ont déterminé que les chèques de l’église avaient été volés.
S’ils sont reconnus coupables, les accusés encourent chacun une peine maximale de 30 ans de prison fédérale pour complot en vue de commettre une fraude bancaire et une fraude électronique. Les peines réelles pour les crimes fédéraux sont généralement inférieures aux peines maximales.
